The hail test · UL 2218 in your browser
Drop a stone on it.
Pick a hailstone the size the National Weather Service uses, pick a roof, and drop it. What you see is a typical result, not a guarantee: real damage depends on the wind, the angle and how old the shingle is.
Result

Choose a size and a roof, then drop the stone.
See every result as a table
| Roof | Quarter (1") | Golf ball (1.75") | Tennis ball (2.5") | Baseball (2.75") |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3-tab asphalt | Granule loss. Granules knocked loose. Often cosmetic at first, but it ages the shingle faster. | Bruise or dent. Bruised mat likely: a soft spot you can press. These crack within a season or two. | Crack. Cracked shingles are typical. Water reaches the underlayment. | Puncture. Punctures and broken tabs are typical. Expect a claim and a replacement. |
| Architectural | Granule loss. Some granule loss. Usually cosmetic on a laminated shingle. | Bruise or dent. Bruising is common. Worth an inspection even if nothing shows from the yard. | Crack. Cracks are likely, especially on older or sun-baked shingles. | Puncture. Cracks and punctures are typical. Most roofs this size of hail hits are replaced. |
| Class 4 impact-rated | No visible damage. Usually no damage at all. | No visible damage. Usually holds. It was tested with a heavier stone than this. | Bruise or dent. May bruise. This is beyond what the test covers, so get it looked at. | Crack. May crack. No shingle is hail-proof at this size; Class 4 just loses less. |
| Standing-seam metal | No visible damage. Usually nothing you can see. | Granule loss. Small dents are possible. Cosmetic; the panel still sheds water. | Bruise or dent. Dents are likely. Panels usually stay watertight, but check your policy on cosmetic damage. | Bruise or dent. Deep dents are typical. Seams usually hold; dented panels are a looks problem first. |
Class 4 impact-resistant roofs · FAQ
Your questions.
Will a Class 4 roof lower my insurance?
It may. Texas insurers may offer a discount for impact-resistant roofs, and Class 4 usually gets the biggest credit. Each insurer sets its own amount, so ask them before you decide.
Is Class 4 hail-proof?
No roof is. Class 4 shingles survive a 2-inch stone in the lab. Bigger hail can still damage them, they just lose less.
